CHOCOLATE'S NO SIN
By Carly Jones
I'm sure we all agree that when we receive chocolates from someone, it warms our hearts... bet you didn't know that it can actually heal and help your heart too! Believe it or not, it's true: a new study finds that eating chocolate is no sin. Granted, this doesn't mean you are encouraged to eat chocolate candy bars all day, but a little indulging in this sweet treat is considered okay. In fact, it was proven that in a study that some individuals may actually benefit from eating chocolate. Overall, people with the highest chocolate consumption levels had 37% lower risk of heart disease and a 29% lower risk of stroke than those who ate the least chocolate.
Another study found that consumption of a cocoa drink rich in flavanols (a key ingredient of dark chocolate) boosts blood flow to key areas of the brain for two to three hours. Increased blood flow to these areas of the brain may help to increase performance in specific tasks and boost general alertness over a short period. The study also suggests that the cocoa flavanols found in chocolate could be useful in enhancing brain function for people fighting fatigue, sleep deprivation, and even the effects of ageing.
Another interesting fact is that a compound by the name of "Phenylethylamine (PEA) may be responsible for some of the pleasurable feelings you get after eating chocolate because it releases natural feel-good chemicals called endorphins in your brain. PEA is released by the brain when people are falling in love. Perhaps this explains why chocolate and Valentine's Day are so closely linked!
Who would've thought that indulging on what you thought was a sin, turns out to be good (in moderation) after all. Not to mention that Valentine's Day is right around the corner and now we can satisfy our sweet tooth with no regrets! Enjoy!
