A Toast to 25 Years!

A momentous occasion warrants a toast and the customary clinking of glasses.  According to Kevin Zraly, author of Windows on the World Complete Wine Course,  this tradition started in ancient times when the Greeks, afraid of being poisoned by their enemies, shared a little of their wine with one another.  If someone had added something to the wine, it would be a short evening for everyone!  The clinking of the glasses also is said to drive away the "bad spirits" that might exist.

Most every culture has a customary adage that accompanies the clinking of glasses.  Here are just a few:

Belgian:  Op uw gezonheid
Chinese:  Nien Nien nu e
Danish/Sweedish/Norwegian:  Skal
French:  A votre sante
German:  Prosit
Greek:  Eis Igian
Italian:  A la salute
Japanese:  Kampai
Polish:  Na zdrowie
Spanish:  Salud
Welsh:  Iechyd da
